Schwab’s Monsters of Verity duology came to a conclusion this year with Our Dark Duet, and with it, her elaborate, breakneck world of monsters, humans, and violence. If you’re itching for more of Schwab’s haunting stories, try The Archived series, which dabbles in romantic entanglements nearly as complex as Kate Harper and August Flynn’s. In The Archived, meet Mackenzie Bishop, inheritor of a secret family duty. Mackenzie is a Keeper of the Archive, a library of the dead where spirits rest on bookshelves—except for the times they wander off and Mackenzie has to rustle them back. The Unbound continues the story, and there are rumors of an eventual third volume, too.

Well-Known Series: To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before
Series to Try: Burn for Burn
In To All the Boys Who’ve Loved Before, Lara Jean Song is done wrong, whether deliberately or not. There’s a certain sense of mortification when super-secret love letters to her old flames actually find their way into the mail. In Han’s Burn for Burn trilogy (a collaboration with Siobhan Vivian), we have the antithesis of that situation: Kat, Lillia, and Mary are on a mission of revenge. Together, they form an alliance to take down all their high school enemies in joint and elaborate fashion. What could go wrong, right? (Also worth a look: Han’s hit Summer trilogy, featuring another torturous triangle.)

Laini Taylor
Well-Known Series: Daughter of Smoke and Bone, Strange the Dreamer
Series to Try: Faeries of Dreamdark
With the sprawling setting of Eretz in the Daughter of Smoke and Bone series and the equally well-imagined Weep in Strange the Dreamer, Taylor is no stranger to elaborate world-building. As you wait for the follow-up to Strange, we’d recommend checking out Taylor’s debut novel, Blackbringer, and sibling, Silksinger, which skew younger but have the same imaginative touch. The Faeries of Dreamdark series stars Magpie Windwitch, a headstrong faerie who’s devoted her life to tracking down demons, of which there are plenty. When a true devil escapes from a Djinn bottle, however, it will take all of Magpie and her friends’ efforts to beat him back into darkness.

Maggie Stiefvater
Well-Known Series: The Raven Cycle
Series to Try: The Wolves of Mercy Falls
There are no Welsh kings in The Wolves of Mercy Falls series, which is, of course, a disappointment. But there are werewolves and a complicated, well, more-than-friendships, in the best Stiefvater tradition. Start with Stiefvater’s bestselling Shiver. In Mercy Falls, Minnesota, Grace watches the wolves behind her home. She’s mostly interested in one wolf, with yellow eyes. When a boy named Sam finds his way into her life, Grace knows his yellow eyes well. In the introspective and emotional story that follows, Sam will fight between his two forms and Grace will fight for the sense of certainty her wolf provides.

Well-Known Series: Shades of London
Series to Try: Little Blue Envelope
The Shades of London series is a paranormal, supernatural, gothic, ghostly thrill ride, but the base of its appeal lies on the shoulders of Rory Deveaux, forever with one foot in her “normal” boarding school world and the other in the underground world of London’s ghost police. Johnson’s contemporary Little Blue Envelope series features another fish-out-of-water on a European adventure: Ginny, who’s sent off on a summer expedition by 13 little blue envelopes, each with their own quest. There’s a sense of joie de vivre in Ginny’s self-discovery that’s infectious and will leave you wishing there were more than two installments in her story.

Well-Known Series: Vampire Academy, Bloodlines
Series to Try: Glittering Court
Mead’s series have certain things in common: strong heroines, unique school experiences, lots of intrigue—and vampires. Mead’s latest, which starts with The Glittering Court, features three of those four qualities. If you haven’t picked it up yet (somehow), the Glittering Court in question is a New World finishing school that turns lower-class girls into proper, marriageable young ladies. Trapped in her life of prescribed nobility, the Countess of Rothford masquerades as one of her servants and strikes out for the court to shape her destiny. The second installment, Midnight Jewel, gives us a new perspective, that of Mira, who came to the Glittering Court a war refugee, and whose persecution continues once there.

Kendare Blake
Well-Known Series: Three Dark Crowns
Series to Try: The Goddess War
The central conflict of the Three Dark Crowns series is dark, deadly, and delicious. Three powerful sisters vie for one throne—and they’ll have to kill each other to get there. The stakes are just as high in Blake’s exploration of Greek mythology. Start with Antigoddess, which finds Athena and Hermes a little down on their luck. Or a lot. In modern times, these old gods find themselves dying slow, painful, and unique deaths. The problem: the cause of their death is their own kind, and there’s a war brewing the likes of which haven’t been seen in centuries.

Meg Cabot
Well-Known Series: The Princess Diaries, The Mediator (and the list goes on)
Series to Try: Abandon
With the many, many books in Cabot’s canon, it’s easy to miss a few—even if you’re on the Genovia tourism board. We’d like to make sure this otherworldly retelling from the queen of YA doesn’t escape your notice, though. Abandon reimagines the Greek myth of Hades and Persephone, in a steamy, page-turning way. Pierce almost died in an accident, but she managed to escape the Underworld. Someone, though, isn’t happy about that. Someone handsome in the most brooding of ways.
