AJ and Simon live in the southernmost region of Texas. Mexico is only a 15-minute drive south. They have never seen snow, but they love the outdoors. When their cousin Roman and his family move to the Rio Grande Valley from Virginia, (a trio is formed) an adventure is born. Roman plants a seed which gradually sprouts. The adventure is fed by deadly escapades, with near-death experiences which would discourage the weak at heart. Their inability to foresee the worst is an asset which shelters their dreams. Their dreams become one, creating a synergistic force. The dream; barely a flame, flickers, and dances in their mind. To go camping in Canada becomes their driving force. Sure, they will not be allowed to go alone, they enlist their grandparents to chaperone. However, before they agree, Mamory (Grandma) places conditions. One is they must allow Pop, (grandfather) a retired US Air Force Master Survival instructor to teach them basic Survival. The Trio wholeheartedly agrees, since learning survival will make their dream even better. Pop takes the trio into Mother Nature's mysterious and brutal, but wonderful world. An example: The Trio is introduced to the Eco-World of a fallen tree which rivals the best of any wildlife adventure story. To train the Trio, Pop must awaken their six senses (Yes, Six). Before they can learn to survive, he must link their formal education to Mother Nature's hands-on world. They must learn about the battle between Mother Nature and Civilization. They must learn the stimuli which makes everything in nature (including them) tick. They must learn the world is a living entity. To learn the art of survival, they must learn to co-exist. Co-exist for the inexperienced, is a romantic notion. To co-exist, the Trio must learn to anticipate Mother Nature's every move. It is a chess game without a re-match.
