"Look at me, Elo—don't you dare look away." Gideon's voice dropped like a command, close enough to steal my breath.
He dragged my chin up with one hand, palm firm, not gentle—control wrapped in warmth. My burned eyes couldn't see him clearly, but my body recognized the steadiness in his scent: Crossvale dominance, cold cedar and iron restraint. Safe… and dangerous at the same time.
Across the hall, Sebastian Varric smiled like a broken man wearing a healed mask. Harriet's laughter echoed—sweet on the surface, poison underneath.
Gideon didn't flinch. He leaned in, blocking the world with his presence, and pressed his forehead to mine as if sealing a vow.
"You want revenge," he said quietly, "then you'll do it on your terms. Not theirs."
My throat tightened. My curse heated under my skin like it was starving for a final strike.
I swallowed the tremor and forced a smile—sharp, wrong, unstoppable.
"Then promise me one thing," I whispered. "When I open his cage… don't let him beg you for mercy."
Gideon's fingers tightened on my chin, eyes unreadable in the lantern-light.
"I promise," he said. "And when they try to stop you—"
He turned my face toward the threat, toward the lie wearing Sebastian's skin, toward the coming collapse.
"—we'll break it first."
Seven days ago, my eyes were burned out—my mother beaten into silence—my life turned into a contract somebody else wrote.
Now Sebastian Varric is "recovered," smiling through a sealed mind, while Harriet and Cassandra parade their truth like justice.
And I—Elo, the one they call a mistake—finally get the only thing I can't be denied:
A chance to decide who dies… and who learns what "mercy" actually costs.
