In the third volume of the Psychopath Paradox series, Political Psychopaths, Nick Forster documents the personalities, lives and careers of several well-known contemporary politicians: Bill and Hillary Clinton; the former British prime minister, Tony Blair; George W. Bush; Russia's 'New Tsar' Vladimir Putin; China's 'New Emperor', Xi Jinping; Donald Trump; and North Korea's third-generation autocratic ruler, Kim Jong-un. These national leaders were chosen because they have been in power at some time during the past three decades and while most people will have some familiarity with them, they might not automatically describe them as 'psychopathic'. They are also (or were) leaders whose espoused ideological beliefs span the political spectrum – from (nominally) communist to social-democratic, liberal, conservative, right-wing populist and neo-fascist.
Three chapters of this book focus on one of the most consequential and anarchistic political leaders of the modern era, Donald Trump. Nick Forster explains how a man who was once described as a 'village idiot', 'incompetent and incoherent', a 'destructive president', and a 'traitor to the West' by Kevin Rudd – a former Australian prime minister – managed to defeat the 'shoo-in' presidential candidate Hillary Clinton in November 2016 and why he easily beat Kamala Harris in November 2024.
The first chapter on Trump documents his childhood, personality and chequered business career before he ran for the White House in 2015 and unexpectedly became the 45th president of the United States in January 2017. The second chapter covers his chaotic and shambolic first term – culminating in the violent mob assault on the Capitol on 6 January 2021 – and it also explains why Trump and his MAGA supporters represent an existential threat to America's dysfunctional, corrupt and unrepresentative democracy. The third chapter on this exemplar of a malignant, narcissistic, untruthful and corrupt functional psychopath contains a critical assessment of Joe Biden's one-term presidency and also explains why Trump defeated the hapless Kamala Harris with ease in the November 2024 presidential election.
Nick Forster shows how their collective political decisions and actions over the past three decades have fomented the precarious geopolitical, geoeconomic, geostrategic, geomilitary challenges and converging crises humanity is now confronted with. In the Postscript to this book, he asks if the greatest threat humanity now faces is not from an 'Axis of Evil' but from a worldwide 'Axis of Psychopaths'; a question he revisits in the final book of the Psychopath Paradox series, The World on a Precipice.
