Excerpt:
"How could you stand for this, Dad?" I stared at my father, who had put down his knife and fork and stared at his peas and mashed potatoes for a long time.
After a long moment, he scratched the stubble of his short beard, and he finally looked up. "Shelby, your mother and I..."
I slapped the table really, really hard. "She's not my mother." I glanced at Lynne, who glanced back at me, dipping her diet cola through a straw. "You divorced my mom three bimbos ago."
Red flushed through my father's face. "Hey, she was the one who decided to fuck the pool guy. Don't you dare lay that divorce at my feet..."
I slapped the table again—hard enough to make a few peas roll off my plate. "I sure can! If you hadn't..."
"Guys," Lynne said. She put down her diet soda. "That is so off topic. Let's get back to the matter at hand, please?" She rested her forearms on the table, and she looked at me with neither malice nor hatred. "Shelby. You're in your twenties. You're living at home with your father's credit cards. Don't you actually want to do something with your life? Or are you going to be intent to be a spoiled little rich kid?"
"How dare you!"
"Answer the question, Shelby." Lynne glanced at my dad, and then back to me. "You have a brain. Don't you think you're wasting it?"
I pushed away from the table and stood so hard, my chair toppled over. "Don't you try that bullshit with me. I know the truth." I definitely wasn't going to out my stepmother, or that the two of us were having an affair. That would have just destroyed my father. Still, I wanted to the threat to shut Lynne up. Only it didn't work that way.
Lynne picked up her diet cola, took a sip, and put it back down. "Truth? I don't know what you're talking about. What I do know is this: you need to be in college, not living in your father's house."
I pointed at her and choked back a sob. "You just want to get rid of me. Get me out of the picture." I turned and I fled the dining room, with tears streaming from my eyes...
