II. The last syllable Of a word is called the ultima*; the next preceding, the penult the next before the penult, the antepenult.* In a word Of two syllables the accent falls on the first syllable. In a word Of more than two syllables the accent falls on the penult if it is long, otherwiseon the antepenult.
Ultima means the last; pen is from pacue, almost; ante means before.
