Presents the complete text of a legal reference first published in 1845, then revised several times and last published in 1882. According to the preface to the first edition, the author endeavored "not only to point out the most important Legal Maxims, but also to explain and illustrate their meaning; to show the various exceptions to the rules which they enunciate, and the qualifications which must be borne in mind when they are applied." Contains chapters on rules founded on public policy, rules of legislative policy, maxims relating to the crown, the judicial office, rules of logic, fundamental legal principles, acquisition and transfer of property, rules relating to marriage and descent, interpretation of deeds and written instruments, law of contracts, and maxims applicable to the law of evidence.
