An ageing population is a world wide phenomenon. Medical progress and improvement in living conditions are such that we are witnessing an ever increasing life span. Understanding the phenomenon of ageing must be examined from several points of view: physiological, biological, psychological, and of course social. This work reviews the existing knowledge concerning this part of developmental psychology and its place in the context of other disciplines such as neurology, sociology, and demography. Although primarily written for human sciences students, it is also of interest for those who work with the elderly.
