This clear and comprehensive work is devoted to Asian cinema from its origins up to today: China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea. The author discusses from a historical and geopolitical perspective the specifics of each of these countries in two parts. The first part deals with Asian cinema from 1895 to 1945 (emergence of the cinema at the Chinese imperial court, development of production in Shanghai, the fragmented Japanese production - the archipelago and occupied territories - and cinema in Hong Kong a British colony from 1842). The second part concerns itself with Asian cinema from the post-war period to today (emergence of national political entities "independent" one from the another: China, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Hong Kong) and finishes with a panorama of current Asian cinema.
