Rose Fyleman's fairies live at the bottom of the garden, dance on summer nights, go a-marketing for a little fish and a coloured bird, and shake the chimney-smoke into shapes. Sweet, musical, and made to be read aloud, her verses taught a whole generation of children to look twice at an empty garden.
