Could Fritz Leiber's classic horror story, "The Dreams of Albert Moreland," first published in the mid-1940s, have possibly been based on fact? Three friends from Tucson - Jake Sowell, Priscilla Trail, and Lance Grantham - travel to Wisconsin to solve an interesting little literary mystery based on Leiber's story. But when they reach Rim House and meet its occupants, Kayla Duncan and her daughter Gael, they discover much more is at stake. For Kayla's eight-year-old son Brendan has disappeared somewhere in the depths of the strange old house amid a series of unexplained occurrences. Rooms appear and disappear, and at the heart of the horror an incredibly old man, Landon Morris Allison - Leiber's model for Albert Moreland - is forced to play a bizarre, chess-type game with a malevolent alien entity that torments him with the ghastly, extracosmic piece referred to as "the archer." Along with Jake's friend, Ellis Cline, who is also a distant relation of Kayla, the group bands together to solve the mystery in the hopes their findings will give them the answer to freeing Brendan - and possibly Allison as well.
